Earlier this year, former NFL star Steve Smith went viral on social media after a man claimed he engaged in an affair with his wife. The man provided text messages and  purported phone calls of conversations with Smith, and this week he elevated the situation be official with a lawsuit.

According to TMZ, the man - Antonio Martinez - says that Smith's alleged relationship with his wife compromised his marriage beyond repair, saying that Smith "willfully, maliciously and intentionally" pursued her during their first meeting in September of last year.

Smith was in town to shoot an episode of a TV show, and that his wife Nicole was a member of the Baltimore Ravens' marching band. Martinez says that Smith "provided his phone number to contact and communicate with" his wife, using the help of his connections in and around the league.

Contact between Smith and Nicole would continue including explicit content sent from Smith to the married woman. Martinez' lawsuit also says that Smith slept with his wife as recently as January of this year after the two of them attended a Ravens playoff game.

The lawsuit then says that Martinez found out about the affair and the messages between them in February, and confronted Smith over the phone. That confrontation led to the viral video clip of Martinez that was posted to social media, confirming that Smith was indeed on the opposite end of that call

"As result of [Smith's] actions and the adulterous relationship between [Smith and Nicole]," the suit reads. "The existing love and affection which existed between Plaintiff and his wife was alienated and destroyed."

Martinez is suing Smith for $100,000 in damages. We'll see if the former receiver is forced to pay up after dealing with a strange and unusual situation with one of his former teams.

Smith spent 13 years with the Carolina Panthers before playing his last three seasons with the Ravens. In his career, he made five Pro Bowls, and four All-Pro teams. He won the NFL's comeback player of the year in 2003 and is considered one of the best wide receivers of his era.
