There are high levels of excitement brewing among Green Bay Packers fans as they anxiously await the team’s first regular season game, which will take place Sunday afternoon at Lambeau Field. Of course, there is a high level of anticipation before every season/home opener, but this year’s brings with an extra layer of excitement.
Obviously, this is because the Packers acquired four-time Pro Bowl linebacker Micah Parsons from the Dallas Cowboys in a blockbuster trade late last week. They had to send two first round picks and three-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Kenny Clark to Dallas in the deal, as well as sign Parsons to a four-year $188 million contract extension.
But despite the high cost, the fact remains that Green Bay added one of the best defensive players in the NFL, a player who will elevate the defense as a whole and make the players around him even better.
That being said, one former NFL MVP isn’t impressed, at least not yet.
Former NFL MVP Cam Newtown Does Not See Micah Parsons Making the Green Bay Packers Better than Other NFC North Contenders
Last season, the Packers were 11-5, but finished third place in the NFC North behind the Detroit Lions (15-2) and the Minnesota Vikings (14-3). Furthermore, they went just a woeful and embarrassing 1-5 against their division opponents, losing every single one of their home games to other NFC North teams.
And former NFL MVP Cam Newton does not see the Parsons trade moving the needle for the Packers much, at least not this season.
“I don’t even think that they’re the best team in their division. They’re not better than Detroit even after this Micah Parsons (deal),” said Newton. “Are the Green Bay Packers the youngest team or one of the youngest teams in the NFL? Absolutely. Is Micah Parsons still a young player? Absolutely. These are things that you can grow and build upon. But when you’re saying they’re instant Super Bowl contenders? No, not so fast.”
As one can see, Newton does not think Green Bay is better than Detroit, who lost both of their top coordinators, their Pro Bowl center, and another key offensive lineman to injury.
Indeed, everything that is improved on paper cannot be fully counted on. It is play on the field that will show how much the Packers improved by adding Parsons.
