Insider claims Chiefs have lost their edge in one key area

The close calls from last season finally appear to be catching up to the Kansas City Chiefs. After going 13-0 (including the playoffs) in games decided by eight points or less last season, Kansas City has started the 2025 season 0-2 with both losses by a combined nine points.

With a lack of execution on offense, limited options down the field for QB Patrick Mahomes and declining production from tight end Travis Kelce, the Chiefs have not looked great so far.

Adam Schefter says Chiefs aura is 'dented'

During a Monday appearance on ESPN's "Get Up," senior NFL insider Adam Schefter was honest about where he feels the Chiefs are currently at.

"I think other teams look at them and think for the first time in awhile, they're beatable," Schefter said. "It's the first time in awhile that Patrick Mahomes — he's never lost three straight games in the NFL — this is the first time it's ever happened. So that air of invincibility, that aura that's been around them, it's dented."

The Chiefs have appeared in five of the last seven Super Bowls with Mahomes under center, winning three of them, so an 0-2 start is rare to say the least. In fact, it is the first time Mahomes has started winless in his first two games and the first three-game losing streak of his NFL career, dating back to the Super Bowl LIX loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Through the first two games, it is clear there are many flaws on this roster. While Mahomes missed some throws in Sunday's game against the Eagles, he did not get much time to throw and was without two of his receivers, Xavier Worthy (right shoulder) and Rashee Rice (suspension), giving him limited options down the field.

As for his usual go-to option in Kelce, the veteran TE has not been himself so far this season. According to Pro Football Focus, Kelce's overall grade of 59.1 is 20th out of 32 tight ends in the league, nowhere close to what fans have come to expect from the future Hall of Famer.

History is not on Kansas City's side

Although Kansas City's defense played well enough for it to win on Sunday after allowing only 216 total yards, it did not get much help from its struggling offense. With Mahomes at QB and Andy Reid on the sideline, the Chiefs should still be expected to make the playoffs, but history is certainly not in their favor.

Since 2020, 42 teams have started a season 0-2 and only five (11.9%) have made the playoffs during that time. That is a staggering number, which speaks to the challenge the Chiefs are up against this early in the season.

This is still the Chiefs and things will likely improve when they are at full strength, but right now, the panic meter continues to rise until Kansas City proves it can right the ship.
