What would an NFL head coaching cycle be without Jon Gruden rumors?
Gruden, 61, has not coached full-time in the NFL since resigning from the Las Vegas Raiders during the 2021 season due to his involvement in an email scandal. Since then, Gruden has done some consulting for the New Orleans Saints and is currently hosting his own podcast and working for Barstool Sports. However, it seems like the Super Bowl XXXVII champion is still monitoring a potential NFL comeback.
In a conversation with Peter Schrager on Good Morning Football this morning, NFL Network's Tom Pelissero said Gruden is a name to watch as the coaching carousel gets rolling.
"Keep an eye on Jon Gruden. We have not seen Gruden on a full-time basis in the NFL since back in 2021 when he resigned after offensive emails were leaked to the media that he had sent while working as an analyst at ESPN,” Pelissero said. "However, he has remained engaged. We saw him on the sideline with the Bucs owners earlier this fall. We saw him working with the Saints back in training camp last year.
“My understanding is if he wanted the Saints offensive coordinator job last year, he could have had it. He ultimately decided he was not going to do that. But I can tell you though, it’s not to say for sure that Jon Gruden will be back. But there are multiple teams that have been doing extensive homework on Jon Gruden the situation, him as a coach, him as a person. I would not be surprised at all if in the coming weeks, you see Jon Gruden’s name popping up interviewing for a head coaching job.”
Gruden went 38-26 with the Raiders from 1998-2001 before jumping to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he won a Super Bowl (against the Raiders) in his first season.
Overall, Gruden went 57-55 with three playoff berths in Tampa. He returned to the Raiders in 2018, going 4-12, 7-9 and 8-8 in his first three seasons before starting 3-2 in 2021. Gruden then stepped down amid the email imbroglio.
Gruden later sued the NFL, which you would think might disqualify him from ever being hired in the league again, but Pelissero seems to think there's a path to him returning.
Stay tuned.
