Kansas City Chiefs Thriving in Run Blocking

The Kansas City Chiefs’ offense has looked as good as it has in a couple of seasons through the first two weeks. The offseason signing of running back Kenneth Walker III looks to be one of the most impactful as he has combined for 369 yards on 56 touches. A lot of it is from his ability to miss tackles, but his offensive line is among the top tier in blocking in front of him.

The Chiefs are tied for seventh in the NFL with a 76% offensive line run blocking win rate, according to ESPN.

This is especially notable because they’re missing their starting left tackle Josh Simmons, who’s out with a back injury. Undrafted free-agent Kahlil Benson won the starting right tackle spot in training camp, but he has shifted over to left tackle in Simmons’ place. Jaylon Moore has slotted in at right tackle; he missed some time in the third quarter Sunday but returned to the game.

Head coach Andy Reid said in his Monday media availability that Simmons is working his tail off, but they expected him to miss two to four games. The Chiefs’ offensive line is spearheaded by All-Pro right guard Trey Smith, who has a 78.1 PFF grade, which ranks eighth among all guards in the NFL. His run-blocking grade is 77.3, which ranks 10th.

The Chiefs face the 0-2 Miami Dolphins on the road Sunday in Week 3.
