Lions sign young safety with ties to Lions coaching staff to the practice squad
David Reginek-USA TODAY Sports

The Detroit Lions cleared a spot on the practice squad early Thursday morning when they released veteran safety C.J. Moore. They already have a replacement by signing Erik Hallett.

The 24-year-old Hallett was a sixth-round pick by the Jaguars in the 2023 NFL Draft. He spent last season on the team's practice squad. He was never elevated during a game, but the Jags brought him back after the end of the season on a futures deal.

The significant thing here is that Hallett was under the tutelage of new Lions defensive backs coach Deshea Townsend in Jacksonville. There must have been something there that Townsend likes.

In addition to playing safety, Hallett also played cornerback for the Jaguars and at Pitt. He was a ball hawk at Pitt in his junior and senior seasons. He had three picks in each year.
