NFL Makes Final Decision On Patrick Mahomes Controversial Play

Officials define roughing as unwarranted contact against a passer before, during, or after the throw. Mahomes was in a passing posture and the ball was already gone. The league still treated it as a legal finish.

This was not a quiet return. Nine months after tearing his ACL and LCL against the Chargers, Mahomes threw for 184 yards and two scores. He also ran one in from 15 yards after an earlier scramble got wiped out by a penalty.

Mahomes still looked like himself after the ACL rehab. Kenneth Walker ran for 173 yards in his Chiefs debut. Denver managed 176 total yards. The only leftover fight was whether Bonitto’s finish crossed the line and Saturday answered it. The NFL took the high hit, took Mahomes pointing at the crew, and left the checkbook closed.

Smith paid, Singleton paid, but Bonitto did not. Mahomes walked out of Week 1 with a win, a rushing score, and no extra protection from the league office.
