Offensive Line Needs to be Strong Early in the Season

For the Dolphins offense to be successful early this year, a group that has been much maligned will have to punch above its weight class.

The offensive line, led by offensive line coach Butch Barry.

First and foremost, they will have to protect Tua Tagovailoa.

To do that, they’ll have to communicate effectively with a few new team members up front.

Add in the training camp injury to Austin Jackson, and they will have some things to work on before Sunday.

But unlike last year, as long as they’re healthy, they seem to have the horses up front to get the job done.

Along with mainstays in Jackson and Aaron Brewer, it looks like James Daniels, Jonah Savaiinaea, and Patrick Paul have real potential.

They’ll need all of them to be in top form from the start.

There is another important reason why they need to be strong from the first play of the season.

Miami will be without Jaylen Wright for a period of time, and De’Von Achane is not 100 percent heading into week one.

Yes, Ollie Gordon looked strong in the pre-season.

However, that is the pre-season, when teams have not yet schemed up for him and the majority of the running game.

In 2023, when the Dolphins’ offense was one of the best in the league, the running game got the offense going.

The running game was also a key factor in Mike McDaniel’s hiring as the head coach.

Last year, it wasn’t so much the scheme as who was on the field for the Dolphins that caused the struggles.

Now, with a more solidified group up front, the hope is that the run game will be revived in 2025.

At least in the early part of the year, it will have to be.

Even without Wright and a healthy Achane, we should still expect Miami to run the ball early and often.

That is when Miami’s offense is at its best.

It also takes the pressure off of Tagovailoa.

With a strong o-line and run game, the Dolphins offense should get back to where it was in 2023.

That would lead to another playoff appearance.

This time, hopefully a playoff win.
