The Green Bay Packers took care of a major offseason item last week when Aaron Rodgers agreed to return to the team. Now they have another big item on the agenda: bringing back Davante Adams.
The Packers assigned Adams the franchise tag, but he reportedly refuses to play under the tag. That means it is up to Green Bay to negotiate a contract to the liking of Rodgers’ favorite target.
According to NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero, the Packers have already made an offer to Adams that would make him the highest-paid receiver ever.
“Their most recent offer to Davante Adams would make him easily the NFL’s highest-paid receiver ever on a traditional extension,” Pelissero reported.
So what is the catch? Pelissero explained.
“But you still have fundamental difference in terms of what this contract should look like. In terms of the structure, the Packers have a very specific structure they usually use. And in terms of length. If you’re Davante Adams, a five-year extension would eat up the remainder of your prime. So there’s still a lot to figure out, and this could potentially take a while.”
Adams is 29 and is coming off a monster season with 123 catches for 1,553 yards, both of which are career-high marks. He also had 11 touchdowns.
Rodgers loves throwing to Adams, so you can bet he told the team he wanted Adams back as a condition for returning to the team. That means the pressure is on Green Bay to get a deal done, one that undoubtedly will be extremely lucrative.
