The NFL has decided that Baltimore Ravens linebacker Roquan Smith should've been flagged for a hip-drop tackle this past Monday night, and is punishing his wallet for it.

Per NFL Media's Ian Rapoport, the league has fined Smith just over $16,000 for his tackle on Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Chris Godwin. The play resulted in Godwin dislocating his ankle.

The play in question happened late during Baltimore's victory over Tampa Bay on "Monday Night Football." Smith left his feet and launched himself at Godwin to make a tackle at the first down marker.

Smith then landed on Godwin's ankle while bringing him down, which caused the dislocation.

Smith was not flagged on the play, but Godwin had to be carted off the field with just 1:04 remaining in the game. Godwin has since been placed on Injured Reserve and will miss the rest of the season.

The NFL put the play under review Monday and by fining Smith after the fact, they determined that the play checked all the boxes for what should've been flagged a hip-drop tackle.

No player has yet been penalized in real time for a hip-drop tackle this season, though at least nine would've qualified under the rules that were put in place this offseason.

Hip-drop fines this year have ranged from as low as $5,191 all the way up to $16,883. Smith was likely docked the latter based on Rapoport's reporting.

This is the fifth fine of Smith's career, the fourth from the last two years alone, and the second fine of just this season. He was fined for another $16,833 for a horse-collar tackle he made against the Kansas City Chiefs back in Week 1.
