The San Francisco 49ers, who own the third-overall pick in the 2021 draft, are reportedly high on Alabama quarterback Mac Jones. However, that's not stopping the franchise from doing its due diligence on North Dakota State product Trey Lance.
According to ESPN's Dan Graziano, the 49ers are "extremely involved" in Lance's second pro day on Monday. Lance typically works under quarterbacks coach Quincy Avery, but he's trained with John Beck in recent weeks at 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan's request, Graziano adds.
Beck played for the Washington Football Team in 2011 when Shanahan was the team's offensive coordinator.
I am told the 49ers are extremely involved in the Trey Lance workout scheduled for Monday. Lance, who works with QB coach Quincy Avery, spent the past couple of weeks working with QB coach John Beck. Kyle Shanahan coached Beck in Washington a decade ago and trusts his opinion.— Dan Graziano (@DanGrazianoESPN) April 19, 2021
It's believed the 49ers designed Lance's workout, as Beck was provided with a list of drills to have the QB work on before Monday, Graziano adds.
San Francisco traded up from pick No. 12 to third overall last month. Although they've been heavily linked to Jones, Justin Fields has the best odds to be taken third overall, according to BetOnline.ag.
The 49ers aren't the only team who will be in attendance at Lance's workout. Both Washington and the Atlanta Falcons are expected to attend.
