The Buffalo Bills fired head coach Sean McDermott shortly after the club's brutal 33-30 overtime loss to the Denver Broncos in the divisional round of the playoffs this past January.
During a Wednesday appearance on "The Rich Eisen Show," McDermott confirmed that he "absolutely" wants to serve as a coach at the highest level again at some point down the road.
"I love coaching," McDermott said, per Myles Simmons of Pro Football Talk. "Love it. I think [I miss] just being a part of something bigger, being a part of a team. I’ve been — we all have been — parts of teams since we were this tall, and you get a chance to do that for a job. And then now, you’re in a year where, for myself, it’s a year off, right? But it’s also a year of opportunity, in a lot of ways, to grow and lean in on my family, as we already talked about. But I think more than anything, it’s just being a part of a team."
McDermott, 52, guided the Bills to eight playoff trips during his nine seasons in charge. However, he and star quarterback Josh Allen went 0-4 against the Kansas City Chiefs in postseason play from January 2021 through January 2025. More recently, Allen committed four turnovers in Buffalo's playoff loss to Denver.
On Wednesday, McDermott joked that his family may be ready for him to get back to work on a full-time basis.
"I think they’re ready to [say], 'Hey dad, stop leaning in and back off a little bit,' maybe," McDermott explained. "But that’s natural."
As it pertains to the 2026 season, McDermott hinted that he could land a gig with a media outlet.
"Looking into that," McDermott said about such an opportunity. "We’ve got some suitors and kind of trying to schedule it all out and see where it goes."
It was recently learned that former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin will be part of NBC's "Football Night in America" this season. Presumably, Fox and/or CBS could have some interest in using a personality such as McDermott for pregame and postgame studio shows.
