Back in 2022 the football world was stunned by the news that former Ohio State and Washington Commanders quarterback Dwayne Haskins was killed after being hit by a truck while attempting to cross a Florida interstate on foot. A lawsuit ensued and now it appears that the lawsuit has reached its end.
According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, there was a "significant development" in the case this week as Rick Ellsley, the attorney for Haskins' widow Kalabrya, announced that a dismissal has been filed in the wrongful death case in Florida. Ellsley said in a statement that the defendants have "paid their respective settlements" and that the case is now closed.
"A significant development: Per Rick Ellsley, attorney for Kalabrya Haskins, as personal representative of the estate of Dwayne Haskins, Jr. a dismissal has been filed in the Florida wrongful death case. 'Each of the various defendants have paid their respective settlements, so the wrongful death case in Florida is now closed,'” Rapoport wrote.

A toxicology report taken of Haskins after his death indicated a high blood alcohol content as well as the presence of numerous numerous drugs including ketamine and methamphetamine among others.
However, the lawsuit alleges that Haskins was robbed and drugged by four people just prior to his death. The lawsuit also alleged that the truck operator was speeding, driving carelessly and violating truck weight limits.
Haskins was the starter for the Ohio State Buckeyes in 2018 and went on to have the single most prolific season in the school's storied history. In 14 games he threw for 4,831 yards and 50 touchdowns - both school records - and finished third in the Heisman Trophy voting while leading the Buckeyes to Big Ten and Rose Bowl titles.
Haskins left after the 2018 season to enter the NFL Draft, where Washington took him No. 16 overall. Unfortunately, life in the NFL wasn't quite as easy as it was in college.
In two seasons for Washington, Haskins completed 60.1-percent of his passes for 2,804 yards and 12 touchdowns with 14 interceptions in 16 games. He went just 3-10 as a starter and was released midway through his second year with the team.
Haskins was working on getting his football career back on track with the Pittsburgh Steelers when the accident robbed him of all his potential. He was just 24 years old and barely a month away from celebrating his 25th birthday.
