Target has yet again missed the mark when it comes to having sports merchandise on its shelves rooted in reality.
Thanks to an Instagram post from Alex Tran of Niners Nation, there is now photographic evidence that Target is selling posters in which the San Francisco 49ers, not the Kansas City Chiefs, are heralded as Super Bowl LIV champions.
Of course it merits noting that the NFL, along with every other major professional sports league, authorizes the manufacture of such merchandise for both teams competing in a championship game so that there is stock available for purchase immediately afterward.
Typically, merchandise for the losing team is taken back by the NFL, where items such as shirts and sweatshirts and other clothing are then sent across the globe to people in need who could not care less who won a football game in the U.S.
It is unclear how these 49ers’ Super Bowl LIV championship posters ended up on Target shelves, though as noted, it’s not the first time the major retailer has experienced such a comical gaffe recently.
