The Lions are not looking for another developmental quarterback right now, they want a veteran, here's three guys who are ready to play

The Detroit Lions are going through some changes at quarterback right now after having to part ways with Hendon Hooker. That doesn't mean the Lions aren't interested in adding a third quarterback this year, but if they do, they're not looking for a developmental guy right now, according to Lions head coach Dan Campbell.

“I would say that we’re looking for somebody that if we need them, we know they can run the show, that they can run the offense, they can process the information," Campbell said. "I think more than can we find a guy to develop that’s unknown, all of those. I’d rather have somebody that certainly, if we’re familiar with or somebody you just know (if) they get in the game, they’re going to get you in the right play, be smart with the football, and all those things.”

With that in mind, here are three quarterbacks who are on the market who can be that guy for the Lions:

Bryce Perkins

Yes, it was the UFL, but Perkins was unstoppable for the Michigan Panthers this season and won the league MVP. It was pretty surprising that he didn't get a shot at an NFL training camp until essentially the last week when the Panthers signed him. He got to play in the final preseason there, and he looked pretty good, throwing 71 yards in a quarter's worth of work. Perkins would be a good guy to add to the Lions' practice squad, and hopefully, he never has to play, but if he does, he can get some things done out there.

AJ McCarron

I like this one a lot because you get more than a quarterback out of it. You basically get a second quarterbacks coach. McCaron was that for the Bengals for a long time, and Zac Taylor gives him credit for the growth he's seen in Joe Burrow. If you have a quarterback who's on the practice squad, you probably want a guy who can do more than carry the clipboard around, and that's where McCaron can help. He'd be very similar to how David Blough was with Detroit.

Ryan Tannehill

Tannehill is still out there, and he's looking for an opportunity. There were rumors he'd sign with the Vikings in March, but that never happened. Tannehill and Dan Campbell have a history together. Tannehill was the Dolphins quarterback when Campbell was the Dolphins' interim head coach. There's a familiarity there. Perhaps a reunion could happen. That is, if Tannehill is willing to be on a practice squad.
