The New York Jets are trying to form a new dynamic duo at a position that needed a complete make over

The New York Jets look plenty different this season. For their offense, a new quarterback headlines that group, but there are adjustments and additions as well. A recent move could present some notable upside down the road for the Jets.

Recent waiver claim by the Jets

The Jets claimed tight end Jelani Woods off of waivers this past week from the Indianapolis Colts. Woods will wear number 86 for New York.

The young TE has always been lauded for his size and athleticism, but it never molded into legitimate production in Indianapolis. While there were plenty of struggles from the quarterback position, the Colts remained hopeful that Woods would find consistency in their offense in some capacity. since he didn't, they moved on and looked elsewhere for depth at the position.

For the Jets, adding Woods made a lot of sense. They are rather unproven at tight end, and Mason Taylor has dealt with injury at points this offseason. With Taylor back in the fold to start the regular season, there's is so much explosiveness at New York's hip for their TE spot.

"He doesn't talk a lot, but he does works a lot though. From the moment he got here he's been working. He doesn't really make any mental mistakes from what I've seen. He's a great route runner, he's smooth, he has natural hands, so he's been great so far." -- Jets QB Justin Fields on Mason Taylor

Potential at tight end for New York

Jeremy Ruckert is the other notable option at tight end for the Jets. His blocking prowess has improved since the start of his NFL career, and head coach Aaron Glenn thinks he can continue to dominate that portion of the game if given more opportunities. With Taylor projecting as more of a receiver at TE, there is more balance in the room this season for the Jets.

Woods won't be pressed into action quickly for New York. Rather, he is key depth who can step into a bigger role if he proves that he can give a different look to defenses than Taylor and Ruckert. The flashes need to happen more often for him to find a consistent role for the Jets after his exit from the Colts.

The Colts knew the Jelani Woods experience was over in Indianapolis even before they chose to waive him as part of their cut down to 53 players. He was the clear fifth best TE on the team to begin training camp and he wasn't able to climb the depth chart at all. Injuries stole the last two years of his career and the team simply couldn't wait any longer for his “what if” to become a reality. There are a lot of reasons to bet on him though so I'm not shocked the Jets are taking the chance on him. He possesses elite size and athleticism for the position and has a lot of really nice flashes during his rookie year. The high point being his. Two-touchdown performance in the teams upset win over the Kansas City Chiefs. He will have a bigger opportunity with the Jets which is what he needs if he's going to be able to prove the injuries are behind him and he's ready to be an impactful football player. I for one and rooting for him and I think a lot of Colts nation feels the same way. -- Destin Adams, A to Z Sports
