The 2025 season is an important one for the Washington Commanders, with the new standard being set last season. The team came up just short of a Super Bowl appearance, and they need everyone to play at their best to get back to that opportunity.
Adam Peters has done a great job continuing to rebuild the roster, but there are still a couple of positions that could cause concern this season, and the Super Bowl hopes may fall to these groups.
Quan Martin will likely be a strong part of the defense this season, and can have a massive breakout season, but it's the uncertainty after him that concerns me . The Commanders replaced Jeremy Chinn with Will Harris in free agency, and I still don't know what to really expect. Harris should improve the coverage game, but we haven't seen it happen yet to feel good about it.
If Martin or Harris goes down, it could get very ugly. Jeremy Reaves, who very rarely ever plays on defense, or Percy Butler, would be next up to start. Martin can't do it all himself, and the team would probably have to call in someone like Justin Simmons if there is a major injury at any point.
This is the obvious answer that everyone was expecting to see, but wished they hadn't. A year later, the Commanders are back in the same situation heading into the season about the uncertainty at the kicker position, and if it'll become another factor this year. The Commanders signed Matt Gay to a one-year, fully guaranteed deal worth $4.25 million this offseason, and he started hot in training camp, but it went downhill.
The preseason showing by Gay confirmed concerns that have followed him as a kicker who struggles with the long kicks, and he went 2 for 4 in the preseason, with both misses coming from 49+ yards out. The Commanders will have way too many close games once again this season, with a tougher schedule to leave any points on the field.
Not everyone will agree with this selection, but this is a ripple effect position for me. If Frankie Luvu or Bobby Wagner goes down, that will put a lot of strain on the youth of the linebacker room. Luvu and Wagner are a top duo in the league, if not the best, but after them, it's just Jordan Magee, Kain Medrano, and Ale Kaho.
Magee is going into his second season already dealing with injuries, which limited his rookie season as well, and Medrano is a Day 3 draft pick, while Kaho went undrafted. Not saying that any of them won't be good because I'm high on all three, but the injuries of Magee and the inexperience of the rookies being thrown out there could be a disaster.
Luvu's ability as a blitzer will also be affected if someone goes down, and he may have to stay back in coverage more than usual. It would change the way the Commanders rush the quarterback as well.
The Commanders' roster is once again much improved after another offseason by Peters, but there are some cracks that remain that could hinder the success of the season if it falls on the safety position, the kicker, or the depth in the linebacker room.
