The Calgary Flames announced today that they have hired former Flame Dave Lowry as an assistant coach. With the departure of Brad Larsen this offseason due to personal reasons, the Flames had an open spot, and have filled it with the 1000-game NHLer.

Getting to know Dave Lowry

The former NHLer played over a thousand NHL games, split between the Vancouver Canucks, St. Louis Blues, Florida Panthers, San Jose Sharks, and, of course, Calgary Flames. He would spend his final four seasons in the Flames organization, captaining the team from 2000 to 2002, when the captaincy transferred to Jarome Iginla. Throughout his time, he had 69 points with the Flames before hanging up his skates for good.

From there, Lowry would stay in Calgary, joining the Calgary Hitmen in 2005 as an assistant before becoming the team’s head coach in 2008. After just one season, he would jump up to the big club as an assistant coach for the Flames for three seasons.

From there, Lowry would go back to the WHL, where he coached the Victoria Royals for three seasons. He was the coach when former Flames prospect Matthew Phillips was a player, and Phillips had nothing but high praise for the former NHLer.

From there, Lowry would join the Los Angeles Kings as an assistant coach for two more seasons before jumping back to the WHL as head coach of the Brandon Wheat Kings. He was then hired as an assistant coach of the Winnipeg Jets in 2020, where he ended up coaching his son, Adam Lowry. He was then named as the interim head coach of the Jets after Paul Maurice re-signed.

What does Dave Lowry bring to the Flames?

Lowry brings a wealth of experience at both the NHL and WHL levels. While he does not have many trophies to his name, he does understand the game at a very high level and understands both how the game operates and the internal workings of the Flames organization. With a coaching staff, including Ryan Huska, Cail McLean, and Trent Cull, the veteran NHLer should bring a ton of experience to the team.
