Canucks GM announces roster move after win over Capitals

The Vancouver Canucks decided to make a roster move Sunday coming off a big win over the NHL-leading Washington Capitals on Saturday night.

After a tough loss to the Edmonton Oilers on Thursday night, the Vancouver Canucks returned to Rogers Arena on Saturday to take on Alexander Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals, which are currently first place in the National Hockey League standings.

Saturday's game saw one lineup change, with Mark Friedman sitting out in favor of defensive prospect Elias Pettersson, who was making his National Hockey League debut against Washington.

Pettersson fared quite well Saturday night, finishing the game with two hits, one blocked shot and was a plus-one in 10:30 of ice time.

With Pettersson's play Saturday night, along with the impending return of defenseman Noah Juulsen, the Vancouver Canucks were forced to make a roster move on Sunday morning.

Vancouver Canucks GM Patrik Allvin announces roster move on Sunday

In a social media post on Sunday, the Vancouver Canucks announced that defenseman Mark Friedman has been assigned to the American Hockey League's Abbotsford Canucks.

"General Manager Patrik Allvin announced today that D Mark Friedman has been reassigned to Abbotsford (AHL)," the Canucks announced.

Friedman, 29, has been up and down between Vancouver and
Abbotsford four times in the last two months and in that time, has suited up for just six games in the National Hockey League.

In those five games with Vancouver, the Toronto, Ontario, native has failed to register any points and has 10 penalty minutes, along with a minus-four rating and four shots on goal.

Meanwhile in 20 games in the American Hockey League, Friedman has six points (one goal, five assists), 15 penalty minutes and is a plus-four.

It'll likely be a little while before we see Mark Friedman back in the National Hockey League as the Canucks will want him playing top-four minutes down in Abbotsford, especially with Elias Pettersson now up with the big club.

The Vancouver Canucks will be back in action Monday night as they travel to St. Louis to take on the Blues.
