With the 144th overall pick, the Calgary Flames drafted forward Ethan Wyttenbach out of the USHL. Being another winger prospect, Wyttenbach is undersized but possesses incredible skill as a player. He was also the first-ever recipient of the Gaudreau Award, an accolade in the USHL given to the player who best embodies the legacy of Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau. Let’s further explore who Wyttenbach is and how he potentially fits into the Flames’ future

Who is Ethan Wyttenbach?

Wyttenbach played this season with the Sioux Falls Stampede, where he recorded an impressive 24 goals and 51 points in 44 games. His performance earned him the prestigious honour of being awarded the Gaudreau Award, as his remarkable showing prompted the Flames to take a chance on him in the fifth round.

While being undersized at 5’9”, Wyttenbach’s skill is undeniable. The Flames yet again went with the theme of prioritizing skill and upside, even if it meant selecting players who were considered undersized by league standards. Wyttenbach is committed to playing for Quinnipiac University for the 2025-26 season.

Wyttenbach and his role with the Flames

The Flames have a deep prospect pool when it comes to wingers, and Wyttenbach only makes it deeper. He showed that this season his strengths include strong offensive abilities, so if Wyttenbach further builds on that, he could turn into a worthwhile pick for the Flames.

Wyttenbach’s projections likely see him becoming more of a middle-six forward at the NHL level. Playing at the college level definitely will help with his development though. He’ll be playing against harder competition, improving his skill set to make the transition to pro hockey.

How this player fits into the Flames’ core

As mentioned, Wyttenbach’s potential likely has him developing into a productive middle-six forward. With that being said, the depth the Flames have for wingers is substantial. With the likes of Matvei Gridin, Andrew Basha, Jacob Battaglia and Aydar Suniev all being in the Flames system, the competition will be fierce. I see all those players as being above Wyttenbach, so he’ll have to show a lot to get a potential look in the big leagues.

However, the Flames still got great value with this pick. The team sees something in Wyttenbach, and I think this is a player who could have a rewarding upside. Despite his lack of size, the trend of smaller players flourishing in the NHL has been increasing substantially. Wyttenbach possesses a great offensive mind, and as he develops, his skill set will only get more prominent.
