Hockey great and NHL legend Guy Lafleur has passed away at the age of 70. We here at NHL Trade Talk join the rest of the hockey world in mourning the loss of a Montreal Canadiens icon and our condolences go out to all his family, friends, and former teammates.

The NHL shared the news on social media and said, “a cornerstone of the Canadiens dynasty in the 1970s and one of the most electrifying players in NHL history, died Friday following a nearly three-year battle with cancer.”

The Canadiens — who Lafleur was most notably connected to as an NHL player — wrote, “The entire Montreal Canadiens organization is mourning the loss of legendary Hall-of-Famer and Canadiens Ambassador.” They added, “Rest in peace, Guy.”

Other teams sent their condolences as well, as did media members and players who recalled his legendary hair, skating stride, and a wicked shot, all while constantly smiling and being a great face for the game. Lafleur was synonymous with both the Habs, and Quebec Nordiques and one of the few rock stars of the game, especially for Canadian fans. The Toronto Maple Leafs wrote, “Guy Lafleur was an iconic player and competitor. A legend of our game that will be greatly missed.”

As Hockey Canada wrote upon hearing the news, “Lafleur not only impacted the game, but changed how it was played. He was a hero to all those in Quebec, across the country and around the world.”

He was a player you hated to play against because he was so good, but his teammates all loved playing with him. He was said to be gracious and funny. He was intelligent and wise and he treated everyone with respect, even though he was constantly under a microscope and under incredible pressure to deliver.

As the Canadiens wrote on their official website, “He leaves behind an incredible legacy that will be remembered for generations, his statue outside the Bell Centre testament to the enduring impact he made on a team, a province, and an entire sport.”
