The Toronto Maple Leafs capped off their California road trip in Anaheim as they faced the Ducks, who were looking to extend their home win streak to three games. The Maple Leafs had a dominant third period over the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday night, with John Tavares scoring two goals to secure their 3-1 win. Ducks defenseman Jacob Trouba suffered an injury in their game against the New York Rangers, giving newer team member Oliver Kylington a defensive spot alongside Olen Zellweger. It was likely to be a tough matchup for the Ducks, as the Maple Leafs are in the hunt for the top spot in the Atlantic Division, and they notoriously put up a hard fight against Anaheim. Joseph Woll would start in net for Toronto, mirrored by Lukas Dostal at the other end of the ice.
Matthew Knies opened up the game’s scoring after a feed from Auston Matthews. The Maple Leafs were off to a hot start, scoring on their first shot on goal. However, the Ducks opted to challenge the goal for a missed high-stick call on Mitch Marner. The coach’s challenge fell in Anaheim’s favour, and Knies’ goal was taken off the board. The game’s first power play came after a tripping call on Brandon Carlo. While the Ducks got a handful of good looks, the game remained scoreless after Toronto’s successful penalty kill. A holding penalty taken by William Nylander put the Maple Leafs on the penalty kill once again–the Ducks did not score on the power play. Max Domi scored with just 35 seconds left in the first period with a fast backhander that whistled past Dostal. The Ducks goaltender made four saves in the opening frame and Woll made 11. The Maple Leafs went into the locker room with a 1-0 lead.
The Maple Leafs were very quickly on their first power play after a tripping penalty was called on Trevor Zegras early in the second period. The Ducks successfully killed off the penalty and maintained their one-goal deficit. A breakaway and deke by Mitch Marner put the Maple Leafs up 2-0. Marner has eight points in the last five games. Anaheim answered in just over a minute, with Leo Carlsson firing the puck through traffic. The Ducks’ goal was Carlsson’s 20th of the season and his sixth goal in as many games. With 38 seconds remaining, the Maple Leafs earned another power play opportunity after a holding penalty was called on Radko Gudas. The Maple Leafs would start the third period with 1:22 of a man advantage. The story of the middle frame was defense – Woll stopped 12 shots, and Dostal stopped eight. Both Anaheim and Toronto would need to step up their offensive game and capitalize on high-quality chances to fight for the win in the third period.
The Maple Leafs came close to scoring on the power play, but Anaheim survived being down a man and killed off the penalty successfully to start the third period. Morgan Rielly was assessed a two-minute minor and the teams traded power plays. Sam Colangelo converted a rebound after a pass from Zegras and tied up the game during the Ducks’ power play. Just seconds after the goal, the Ducks went on another power play following a roughing penalty against Matthew Knies on a big hit to Ducks defenseman Kylington. Woll stopped a handful of solid chances from Anaheim and the Maple Leafs killed off the penalty. After a few minutes of the teams trading shots on goal, Toronto went up 3-2 after an impressive redirect from Steven Lorentz, just his seventh goal of the season. This goal would be the game-winner for Toronto, finishing off their win over the Ducks.
The Maple Leafs head back home with two wins and will face the Florida Panthers at home on Wednesday. The Ducks will finish off their homestand looking for a win against the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday.
