While there is still time for the 2025-26 NHL season to begin, there are still doubts regarding the future of Connor McDavid. An NHL insider on Sunday expressed that nothing has been decided yet while speaking about the contract extension of the Edmonton Oilers captain. For the unversed, the 3-time NHL MVP signed a massive 8-year, $100 million contract extension in 2017.

This saw him become one of the highest-paid players in the league with an Average Annual Value (AAV) of $12.5 million. And now, he will enter the final year of his contract in the upcoming season. If he does not sign a contract extension in the season, he will become an Unrestricted Free Agent (UFA) when his deal comes to an end in June 2026.

The early assumptions were that he would sign a long-term deal with the team. Reports then claimed that there was a short-term deal on the table. NHL insider Ryan Rishaug chimed in on the future regarding McDavid on Sunday.

In a tweet on X, the TSN insider expressed that there is a real possibility of the forward not signing a deal before the start of the season.

I believe not signing a deal before the start of the season is a real possibility. More real than perhaps thought by many at the end of the season. That’s why we’re hearing a lot about that option right now. That said I also believe that decision has not been made yet. He and his agent Judd Moldaver continue to weigh options and it’s still possible he does get something done. Nothing is decided yet.

If McDavid does not sign a contract extension with the team before the start of the new season, there will be a barrage of questions thrown at him during the season. The Oilers’ fans would be hoping to avoid such a scenario where their captain keeps getting asked about his future.

Connor McDavid recently claimed he has every intention of winning in Edmonton

Connor McDavid‘s contract situation has become a talking point in the NHL. While there are chances that he will eventually pen down a huge deal, there are some who have doubts. Recently, he spoke on this matter and claimed that he has every intention of winning in Edmonton.

This June, the Oilers suffered another massive heartbreak. Despite winning Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final, the Canadian outfit ended up losing the finals to the Florida Panthers in Game 6. A four-goal performance from Sam Reinhart propelled the Panthers to a 5-1 win in Game 6, which sealed a 4-2 series win for them.

This marked the 2nd straight year that McDavid and his team ended up on the losing end in the finals against the Panthers. In 2024, they came back from 3-0 down in the series to force Game 7 but lost the final game 2-1.

One of the goals that McDavid has is to bring home the Stanley Cup. Since their triumph in 1990, the Oilers have made 3 trips to the Stanley Cup finals and have lost on all 3 occasions.

While speaking with the reporters a few days ago, McDavid spoke on his future and reflected back to his comments in June following the loss against the Panthers. The 28-year-old once again expressed that he will take his time to decide what’s best for his future.

I’ll take my time and go through everything. I have every intention to win in Edmonton. It’s my only focus, maybe next to winning a gold medal with Canada. I’ll take my time going through it with my family, my agent and everybody involved. We’re going through it slowly.

McDavid joined the Oilers in 2015 as the No.1 draft pick that year. Since then, he has gone on to become one of the top players in the league and won several accolades while accomplishing several huge milestones. The upcoming season will be his 11th year with the team.

Connor McDavid expected to sign the largest AAV in the NHL next season

At the moment, his teammate Leon Draisaitl holds the record for the largest AAV in the NHL. The German international penned down an 8-year, $112 million deal last year. This deal sees him having an AAV of $14 million.

Recently, NHL insider Frank Seravalli expressed that McDavid could pen down a deal with an AAV between $16-$17.5 million.

Jeff Jackson, McDavid’s former agent and current CEO of the Oilers, believes that the negotiation process with him will not last long. Only time will tell when and what type of deal the forward will choose for his future.
