The Boston Bruins were hit with a major scare on Sunday night when one of their key players went down hard. Charlie McAvoy, the Bruins’ top defenseman, took a heavy hit to the head that left fans inside the arena concerned.

The incident happened late in the first period as McAvoy carried the puck through the neutral zone. As he crossed center ice, he was met by an open-ice hit from Panthers’ forward Sandis Vilmanis. On the play, Vilmanis appeared to leave his feet and made contact with McAvoy’s head using his elbow. McAvoy dropped to the ice immediately and stayed down.

Teammates and medical staff rushed to his side before helping him to his feet. McAvoy was then escorted off the ice and headed straight down the tunnel for further evaluation.

Officials reviewed the play and assessed Vilmanis with a two-minute minor for an illegal check to the head. Despite McAvoy being the one injured, the Bruins ended up shorthanded following the sequence, which only added to the frustration on the Boston bench.

Fortunately for the Bruins, McAvoy returned to the ice at the start of the second period. His return was a huge relief for the Boston side and also Team USA. The 28-year-old is part of the United States’ hockey roster for the Winter Olympics in Milan, starting from February 6.

Earlier in the season, he missed 10 games after taking a puck to the face that required facial surgery. During that recovery period, McAvoy was limited to a liquid diet and lost nearly 20 pounds.

Despite the scare, McAvoy finished the game and nearly played hero. The Bruins trailed 4-2 late in the third period before goals from Mark Kastelic and Casey Mittelstadt forced overtime. In the shootout, McAvoy had a chance to win it, but Bobrovsky poke-checked his attempt away before Brad Marchand scored to seal a 5-4 win for the hosts.
