Former All-Pro CB makes feelings on Giants' Daniel Jones clear

Three-time first-team All-Pro cornerback Patrick Peterson is among members of the NFL community not expecting Daniel Jones of the New York Giants to emerge as a top-tier quarterback this season.

"I had an opportunity to play against Daniel Jones a couple times — ain’t nothing impressive about him to a defense," Peterson said during the latest edition of his "All Things Covered" podcast, as shared by Gabriel Trevino of NJ Advance Media for NJ.com. "He’s big and strong, but he hasn’t shown us arm talent, like, crazy arm talent."

The Giants declined the fifth-year option attached to Jones' rookie contract back in the spring of 2022, but he then guided the club to a playoff berth and a road postseason victory. Giants general manager Joe Schoen ultimately elected to sign Jones to a four-year deal in March 2023 that allowed the club to hold onto running back Saquon Barkley via what became an altered franchise tag. Barkley now is a member of the Philadelphia Eagles.

NFL Network personality Rich Eisen has repeatedly insisted over the past several months that the Giants have "buyer's remorse" regarding Jones' contract that the club can escape next offseason. Jones dealt with two different neck-related issues from the fall of 2021 through last season before he suffered a torn ACL in his right knee on Nov. 5.

"He’s shown an inability to read defenses quickly, to get the ball out quickly, and I just think he has a problem dissecting the 11 guys on defense," Peterson added about Jones. "His process is too slow to excel as a great NFL quarterback. He has talent. He has all the measurables. It just not coming together on the football field."

Whatever did or didn't happen as it relates to the Giants' alleged interest in North Carolina Tar Heels quarterback Drake Maye ahead of this year's draft, the truth of the matter is that Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll are now married to Jones unless backup Drew Lock becomes some sort of revelation between the first day of training camp and New York's final preseason game. Jones will look to silence critics such as Peterson starting with Big Blue's 2024 regular-season opener versus the Minnesota Vikings on Sept. 8.
