Some have dubbed Patrick Mahomes the football equivalent of former Chicago Bulls and Washington Wizards guard Michael Jordan. The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback welcomes that comparison.
In a piece published Tuesday, Mahomes told Sports Illustrated's Greg Bishop he wants his career to parallel Jordan's.
"Obviously that's the hope," Mahomes said. "To be someone like Jordan, who has an impact on the game."
Like Jordan, Mahomes has a signature play style. Jordan broke the mold with his high-flying dunks. Mahomes is seemingly changing the game with his scrambling and deep touchdown passes.
They're also winners. In 13 seasons with the Bulls, Jordan won six NBA Finals. Mahomes, 29, has captured three Super Bowls in eight seasons with the Chiefs.
"I want to be remembered for winning, obviously," Mahomes said. "But I want to be remembered for how much fun it was to watch me play, and for the person I was on the field. I have that fire. I want people to enjoy the moment, every time."
Mahomes seems to be doing that. In November, the NFL revealed that Mahomes has the third-highest-selling jersey in the league in 2024, behind Chicago Bears rookie quarterback Caleb Williams and Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud.
This season, the Chiefs aim to become the first team in the Super Bowl era to win three straight championships. They're off to an excellent start thus far.
Kansas City (12-1) clinched its ninth straight AFC West title in a 19-17, Week 14, victory over the Los Angeles Chargers. Mahomes is tied for the league's eighth-most touchdown passes (20) in his first 13 starts.
If Mahomes and Co. hoist another Lombardi Trophy, that would make the Jordan comparison more accurate. He led the Bulls to two three-peats in his career: the first from 1991-93 and the second from 1996-98.
