After trading star outfielder Kyle Tucker to the Chicago Cubs last week, the Houston Astros made a much-needed addition to their lineup on Friday in free-agent first baseman Christian Walker.
Agreeing to a three-year, $60M deal, the power-hitting right-handed slugger is moving to a ballpark that fits his hitting profile perfectly.
Over the last three seasons, Walker has averaged 32 home runs and 94 RBI with a .250/.332/.481 slash line while winning three National League Gold Glove Awards.
The Astros' first base production was abysmal last season, with Jose Abreu and Jon Singleton combining for 15 home runs and 49 RBI.

As a result of signing Walker, Houston will forfeit its 2nd- and 5th-highest selections in the upcoming 2025 MLB Draft and will lose $1M from its international signing bonus pool.
Walker's signing likely signals the end of Alex Bregman's tenure with the club. Currently a free agent, the Astros have added two third basemen in the Tucker trade and will look to use funds elsewhere to improve the team.
The bottom third of Houston's lineup leaves much to be desired, so an upgrade to its outfield might be the next move the Astros make to extend their window of dominance in the American League West.
With outfielder/designated hitter Yordan Alvarez and second baseman Jose Altuve locked up for the foreseeable future, the Astros could use some rotation help after being plagued by injuries in 2024.
Walker leaves the Arizona Diamondbacks as one of only three players to win three Gold Gloves with the franchise.
His departure leaves behind a large hole for the D-backs to fill, as he ranks fourth in home runs, seventh in total bases and seventh in RBI in franchise history.
