The New York Giants are now responsible for the worst overall record in the NFL after they fell to 2-13 via this past Sunday's 34-7 loss at the Atlanta Falcons that featured New York quarterback Drew Lock throwing two interceptions that were returned for touchdowns.
During Monday's edition of the WFAN afternoon show, Giants icon and current NFL analyst Tiki Barber blasted head coach Brian Daboll for starting Lock after 2023 undrafted rookie Tommy DeVito cleared the concussion protocol late last week.
"I’ve gotten to the point where I don’t trust that decisions are being made in the interest of winning," Barber said about the Giants, as shared by Ryan Chichester of Audacy. "I’m not saying they’re tanking, but I told you months ago who Drew Lock was...there are moments where he’s gonna make terrible, game-changing decisions. I’ve seen it since he was a rookie."
While some Giants fans posting on social media are thrilled the club is on track to "earn" the No. 1 overall pick of the 2025 NFL Draft, it was made clear in November that team co-owner John Mara would "never" sign off on a regime making personnel decisions with losing in mind. Since then, Big Blue has endured three double-digit defeats. Meanwhile, rumblings continue to suggest that Mara could show Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen the door next month.
"I found myself saying, 'Forget giving you the best chance to win. Playing Drew Lock almost ensures that you’re going to lose because he’s going to do this constantly,'" Barber continued. "He’s not the guy you want to put into a situation to try to win a football game. ....We know who Drew Lock is, so how the heck can you keep putting him out there? They can’t honestly think that Drew Lock gives them the best chance to win."
Neither Lock nor DeVito is New York's long-term answer at the position, and QB3 Tim Boyle is little more than a "break-glass-in-case-of-emergency" option.
The harsh truth is that it likely doesn't matter who Daboll starts for this coming Sunday's home game versus the 7-8 Indianapolis Colts. MetLife Stadium could be at least half-empty for that contest, and those in attendance may actively root for the hosts to lose so that the club can acquire either Miami Hurricanes quarterback Cam Ward or Colorado Buffaloes star signal-caller Shedeur Sanders via the draft.
As of Tuesday morning, DraftKings Sportsbook listed the Giants as eight-point underdogs against the Colts.
