Early in the third quarter of Monday night's game between the Miami Dolphins and New York Jets, Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill suffered a devastating leg injury that left him needing an air cast before he was transported to a local hospital.
Following Miami's 27-21 win that improved the club to 1-3 on the season, Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel shared how Hill inspired his teammates while receiving treatment on the field.
"He was probably in the best spirits of any player that I've ever seen [have] such a terrible experience," McDaniel said about Hill, per Marcel Louis-Jacques of ESPN. "He immediately had wide eyes and was talking, 'I'm good, just make sure the guys get this win.' He was focused on the team."
Miami players such as wide receiver Jaylen Waddle and running back De'Von Achane responded by helping the hosts complete two consecutive touchdown drives that propelled them to a 24-10 advantage. While the Jets later decreased Miami's lead to six points with under two minutes remaining in regulation, the game's outcome was never really in doubt.
"I think it's giant," McDaniel added about what Hill said to teammates on the field after his injury. "I saw him make eye contact and rip a joke or two to Waddle and De'Von, and I think a lot of guys got back into the game, provoked by what he said verbally. We talked a lot about all the stuff that Tyreek has done this offseason, and a big portion is leading by example and connecting with his teammates, and he kind of utilized that connectivity to make sure that his team was finishing on the right end. He was inspiring in that situation, and I think his teammates benefited from that."

Hill was the subject of numerous trade rumors even before Miami lost three straight games to open this season. On Tuesday morning, ESPN's Adam Schefter revealed that Hill dislocated his left knee and tore multiple ligaments, including his ACL. The 31-year-old won't play again this season and may never again feature for Miami.
As it pertains to the rest of the Dolphins' 2025 schedule, a team with a head coach on the hot seat will need targets such as tight end Darren Waller to step up in Hill's absences. Waller tallied two touchdown catches in his campaign debut on Monday evening.
"I feel like there will be a lot of guys in the receiver room that will have more opportunities to make plays. I have faith in them, especially from what I've seen over camp and the first few weeks," Waller said after the victory. "Football is a game and a business where you got to move forward. There is no replacing [Hill], but I feel like we got guys that can get the job done."
As of Tuesday morning, ESPN BET had the Dolphins as 1.5-point road underdogs for this coming Sunday's game at the 1-3 Carolina Panthers.
