Victor Wembanyama is not taking his amazing situation with the San Antonio Spurs for granted.
The Spurs phenom was monstrous in his playoff debut on Sunday in Game 1 of his team’s first-round series against the Portland Trail Blazers. He went off for 35 points on 13/21 shooting, mixing a few thunderous dunks with 5 deep balls from beyond the arc at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Texas.
Wemby had the crowd in a frenzy throughout the 111-98 Game 1 win as two other Spurs No. 1 picks, Tim Duncan and David Robinson, watched from the crowd. The tandem of former champions looked just as giddy as every other fan in attendance to see Wembanyama rise to the occasion.

After the game, Wembanyama was asked if he “feels the weight” from Spurs legends like Duncan and Robinson showing up to watch him lead the Spurs on the playoff stage.
“I wouldn’t say weight,” Wembanyama corrected the reporter.
“I would say it feels safe. It feels like if you trip, there’s a lot of hands that’s ready to catch you. From Day 1, it’s felt that way.”

Wembanyama landed in arguably the best situation possible with the Spurs — a team that already has the blueprint for building around a franchise-altering center. Duncan and Robinson both won multiple championships in San Antonio and have a wealth of wisdom to offer Wemby in his pursuit to do the same.
From the moment Wembanyama officially became a Spur in 2023, Duncan has committed to being a mentor to the 7’5″ Frenchman. The rest of the franchise’s icons have followed suit, showing love to Wemby whenever possible.
Like a child with loving and supportive parents, Wembanyama had nothing but love for his mentors after winning his first of many playoff games in a Spurs uniform.
