49ers' Kyle Shanahan suffered serious injuries in offseason car crash

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan suffered significant injuries in an offseason car crash that will limit his activity at the start of training camp.

The 49ers revealed Saturday that Shanahan suffered “non-life-threatening injuries” in a car crash last week.

He will take part in camp on a limited basis as he recovers from those injuries, with assistant head coach Chris Foerster taking on a larger role until he is healed.

"San Francisco 49ers Head Coach Kyle Shanahan was involved in a car accident last week where he suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Coach Shanahan will participate in team activities on a limited basis at the start of training camp while he recovers. Coach Shanahan and the 49ers organization would like to sincerely thank all first responders involved for their efforts and care," the 49ers wrote in a statement.

"Shanahan broke his nose, three ribs, his hand, needed more than 40 stiches in his face and suffered a severe concussion" as a result of the July 14 wreck, according to Adam Schefter and Nick Wagoner of ESPN. He collided with an SUV and spend most of the day in the hospital before being released.

Palo Alto police confirmed that no one was cited for the wreck, both drivers were cooperative and drugs and alcohol were not involved in the crash.

Shanahan, 46, is widely regarded as one of the league’s top coaches. He has been the Niners head coach since 2017 and has posted a regular-season record of 82-67. He has reached the playoffs in five of his nine seasons in charge, including two Super Bowl appearances and two other appearances in the NFC Championship Game.
