Robert Kraft says Patriots have record-breaking contract offer for Christian Gonzalez

The current mark for highest-paid cornerback in the NFL is Los Angeles Rams cornerback Trent McDuffie, who signed a four-year deal worth $31 million per year after he was acquired in a trade with the Kansas City Chiefs this offseason. 

In his three years, Gonzalez has rapidly developed into one of the elite cover corners in the NFL. He has only intercepted three passes (and none during the 2025 season), but that is largely due to the fact teams do not typically challenge him. When they do, it usually goes poorly. Teams completed just 53.5% of the passes thrown in Gonzalez's direction in 2025, while also managing only a 79.9 passer rating. For his career, teams are completing only 56.9% of the passes thrown his way with a 77.3 passer rating.

Just for context on that, if your quarterback were only completing 56% of their passes with a passer rating in the high 70s, they would be one of the worst quarterbacks in football. 

The potential holdup on an extension is that Gonzalez might be in a waiting game with Seattle Seahawks cornerback Devon Witherspoon. Both players, who happen to share the same agent, are looking to get new deals before the start of the regular season, and it is almost a given that whoever signs first is going to have their contract surpassed by the other. 

The only questions now are who signs first, for how much and how much more does the other get in response?
