Chiefs HC Andy Reid speaks after OC Eric Bieniemy's wife reportedly shot

On Sunday night, the wife of Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, Mia, was shot in the couple's Virginia home.

Mia Bieniemy, 57, has since been hospitalized and is now in stable condition. On Sunday, Eric Bieniemy, 56, was at training camp at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph, Missouri. On Monday, he left the team to be with his wife.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid spoke on the situation following Monday's practice. The coach said he and the team are keeping Eric and Mia Bieniemy in their thoughts.

"[Mia Bieniemy is] a saint. ... One of God's good blessings," the coach said. "...Things happen and you have to work through it. ... We all love EB... There is always a blessing in there somewhere. I know things will work out."

Reid added that there's no set timetable for Eric Bieniemy's return to the team. Passing game coordinator Joe Bleymaier and run game coordinator Andy Heck will assume OC duties during his absence.

Elijah Bieniemy, the 27-year-old son of Eric and Mia Bieniemy, was arrested for his alleged role in the shooting. He has been charged with malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and discharge of a firearm inside a dwelling. He was taken to the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center and held without bond.

Depending on how long his wife needs to recover and the legal situation unfolds, Eric Bieniemy could be away from the Chiefs for an extended period.

He reunited with the team this offseason and is expected to play a key role on the coaching staff. Eric Bieniemy was Chiefs OC from 2018-22 before serving in the same role for the Washington Commanders in 2023. During his first tenure in Kansas City, the Chiefs won two Super Bowls (2019 and 2022), and quarterback Patrick Mahomes captured two league MVPs.
