Trainer for Patriots' Christian Gonzalez shares massive update on contract saga

A Monday report teased that it is "a matter of time" before the New England Patriots and cornerback Christian Gonzalez will come to terms on a lucrative contract extension. 

During a Monday appearance on Boston sports radio station 98.5 The Sports Hub, trainer Christian "Flight" White suggested that Gonzalez will put pen to paper on a deal before the Patriots open the regular season with a Super Bowl rematch at the Seattle Seahawks on Sept. 9.

"He fell in love with the place," White said about Gonzalez's relationship with New England, per Matt Dolloff of 98.5 The Sports Hub. "He wants to be there for however many more years they agree on the extension, and it's probably further after that. I'm just hoping they do right by him at the end of the day. I think it'll get done."

Both Gonzalez and Seattle Seahawks cornerback Devon Witherspoon are represented by the Win Sports Group. Earlier this summer, Witherspoon signed a four-year, $132M deal. 

A report from this past Sunday revealed that the Patriots and Gonzalez have been "trying to bridge the gap" in contract talks. That same story shared that "the sticking points have more to do with structure and total dollars" attached to what is expected to be a four-year extension. 

Christian Gonzalez's trainer responds to Robert Kraft comments

In July, Patriots owner Robert Kraft said he was willing to make Gonzalez the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL. Patriots executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf later insisted that is still the case, but White made it sound as if Kraft wasn't being totally honest about what had been offered to Gonzalez. 

"It was true at the time, but it's just not all the way true," White explained. "The context is, 'Yes, we did offer you to be the highest paid,' but the contract language was kind of trash. So, we kind of had to sort through that stuff to make it make sense."

There continues to be no indication that a Patriots team coming off a Super Bowl appearance will trade Gonzalez, who still has two years remaining on his existing contract. That said, White hinted that Gonzalez's deal has become more expensive since the two sides began negotiations. 

"He's gonna continue to show them why they should get this done sooner than later," White added. "I think the longer they wait, the higher the price, at this point."

According to NBC Sports Boston, White also said that Gonzalez is "getting close" to signing an extension. One would think both Gonzalez and the Patriots would want to get this settled before the regular season kicks off on the second Wednesday of September.
