Dak Prescott closing in on major milestone with Cowboys

It's so close, you can almost taste it. The Dallas Cowboys' first game of their 2026-27 season is coming up quickly, with that game being the Cowboys against the New York Giants on Sept. 13.

Jerry Jones and company, of course, hope this is the year the Cowboys really have a breakthrough and do a deep playoff run. Heading into the new season, the Cowboys are smack dab in the middle of ESPN's power rankings for the season.

The middle isn't a bad place to be. It's better than being at the bottom, but what's really great is what ESPN says about quarterback Dak Prescott.

In ESPN's preseason NFL power rankings, out on Tuesday, the outlet puts the Cowboys at No. 15. That's up just a bit from their post-draft ranking at No. 16.

The "milestone to watch" here is "Prescott becoming Cowboys' career leader in touchdown passes," according to Todd Archer of ESPN. That sounds pretty awesome for the Cowboys.

"Prescott needs six touchdown passes to break Tony Romo's team record of 248 touchdown passes set from 2006 to 2016," Archer notes in the piece. "Prescott could do it as early as Week 2 against the Commanders. His career high in a game is five against the Eagles in 2022, but he has thrown more touchdown passes against the Giants (31) and Commanders (32) than any other team."

Archer adds, "Once he sets that mark, Prescott will hold the team records for yards, attempts and completions."

So, this could be a big year for Prescott, filled with some highs. If that's the case, it only means good news for Dallas.
