Brendan Cellucci represents a bright future for Blue Jays bullpen

The Toronto Blue Jays' season has been a letdown. Since the team called up left-handed reliever Brendan Cellucci, however, he's dominated and illustrates a bright future for the team's bullpen.

Cellucci made his debut on Sept. 15 and pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings with three strikeouts against the Detroit Tigers.

Since his debut, he's yet to give up a run and has gone four consecutive innings without giving up a hit across his first three appearances. While the 28-year-old gave up his first hit in the team's 4-3 loss against the Baltimore Orioles on Monday, he's showcased solid upside.

His sweeper has been his primary weapon of mastery, as he's collected five strikeouts with it, and it's been unhittable, with opponents batting .000 against it. While it's a small sample size, he's demonstrated his ability to command the strike zone with it, and he's pitched with a ton of confidence.

What Brendan Cellucci can offer the Blue Jays bullpen

Cellucci has logged eight strikeouts across 5 1/3 innings with a stunning 0.56 WHIP and provides the Blue Jays pen with a compelling southpaw. While we've only witnessed a glimpse of what he has to offer, it's been encouraging and showcases how he has the potential to become a high-strikeout reliever.

After being released by the Boston Red Sox on July 28, 2025, he signed with the York Revolution of the independent Atlantic League on July 30. He boasted a 1.96 ERA and nine saves across 18 appearances that helped lead the team to winning the 2025 Atlantic League championship.

Following his success in independent ball, he signed a minor league contract with the Blue Jays in January 2026. With Triple-A Buffalo, he recorded a 3.16 ERA with 22 strikeouts across 51.1 innings, which merited a late-season call-up to the big leagues. Seemingly, his path to the majors is proof of his determination, which makes him a compelling reliever for the team's future bullpen needs.

He also possesses an intriguingly deceptive delivery that's helped him generate elite swing-and-miss with his sweeper and slider. Additionally, his ability to provide multi-innings of relief while also being effective at inducing ground balls makes him a valuable asset to the Blue Jays relief corps for the coming years.
