Guardians phenom Parker Messick climbs southpaw rookie list amid ROY race

AL Rookie of the Year candidate Parker Messick reached a new strikeout milestone in his stellar 2026 breakout campaign with the Cleveland Guardians.

Coming into Tuesday's left-handed rookie pitching duel against Payton Tolle of the Boston Red Sox, Messick sat at 186 strikeouts. He was only three strikeouts shy of tying Gary Peters for fifth place on the all-time AL/NL freshman left-handed strikeout list.

The 25-year-old's five-strikeout performance raised his strikeout total to 191, allowing him to take sole possession of fifth place on the prestigious rookie list. The milestone is icing on the cake for the already-stellar and phenomenal rookie season that Messick has delivered this season.

As well, on Sept. 5, Messick passed CC Sabathia (171 strikeouts, 2001) for the second-most strikeouts (172) by a rookie pitcher in Guardians franchise history. He accomplished that feat by striking out Dillon Dingler in that game, while also recording a career-high 12 strikeouts in Cleveland's 6-0 loss to the Detroit Tigers.

Parker Messick's strikeout feat is making the AL ROY race more competitive

Messick is sporting a dominant 12-9 record with a polished 2.55 ERA and a 1.04 WHIP. In addition, his 191 strikeouts also lead all rookie pitchers in MLB this season, making him a top candidate behind AL ROY favorite Kevin McGonigle.

With another start remaining for the young superstar in the regular season, he has the chance to reach 200 strikeouts and make the race more competitive. Whether that will be enough to beat McGonigle in the ROY race is still questionable. But regardless, the young superstar is proving that he deserves it.

Messick will have the chance to carry his rookie dominance into the postseason, with the Guardians in a good position to clinch as early as Wednesday.
