Cost-effective strategy powers Rays to first AL East title since 2021

Consider the Tampa Bay Rays the anti-Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Dodgers — who have the highest payroll in baseball ($408M), per FanGraphs — have paid boatloads to stars like designated hitter/pitcher Shohei Ohtani, shortstop Mookie Betts, first baseman Freddie Freeman and ace Yoshinobu Yamamoto. Meanwhile, the Rays have used a more cost-effective strategy. It has yielded excellent results.

The Rays beat the New York Yankees 6-1 on the road Tuesday night, clinching their first American League East title since 2021. Tampa Bay (96-61) remains on track to clinch the No. 1 seed in the AL. Even more impressive, given that the championship contender was built on a budget.

FanGraphs estimates the Rays have the 28th-highest payroll ($90M) among the 30 teams in Major League Baseball. Peanuts compared to their divisional rivals' bankrolls. The 90-67 Yankees have the third-highest payroll ($310M) in baseball. The 84-73 Boston Red Sox, meanwhile, have the 12th-highest payroll ($199M).

Credit the Rays' success to superb drafting, player development and shrewd trades. One of those moves paid dividends for Tampa on Tuesday night.

In May 2021, the Rays acquired starting pitcher Drew Rasmussen from the Milwaukee Brewers. After battling injuries early in his career, he has since emerged as one of the club's top arms, making two All-Star Games (including in 2026).

He was dealing again at Yankee Stadium. Against New York, Rasmussen pitched 6.2 innings, striking out 11 batters and allowing one hit and one earned run.

Rasmussen — who entered Tuesday with the seventh-best ERA (2.67) in baseball — is set to make $5.75M this season. Yamamoto, who ranked fifth in ERA (2.51), is set to make $20.3M. What a bargain for the Rays.

Now, throwing copious amounts of money at stars can deliver World Series titles. It has worked for the Dodgers (96-60), who have won consecutive Fall Classics. The Rays, however, are proving that not all teams must follow that model. Some can build a championship contender without writing blank checks.
