England captain Harry Kane gives honest update on NFL kicking future

Harry Kane is 33 years old, coming off 61 goals in all competitions for Bayern Munich last season, and still talking about field goals.

Speaking to reporters at England camp on Wednesday, the striker pushed his familiar NFL kicking ambition a step further by floating the idea of pairing it with a Major League Soccer (MLS) stint.

"That is something I will try and look at a bit more seriously," Kane reportedly said. "It all depends on what happens in my career over the next five or six years, the motivation and what I want to do. The NFL is a lot more realistic than the golf one, let's put it that way."

"Maybe if I am in the MLS in the future or somewhere like that it might be a thing where you could connect the two, with the seasons," he added. "But it is in the back of my mind because right now, I am feeling that I want to play as long as I can here."

Back in 2019, he had an interview where he put a timeline on it, saying he wanted to try kicking in "10 or 12 years." So Wednesday's five- or six-year window lands roughly in the same place, around 2031 or 2032.

How MLS's new calendar lines up with an NFL season

Maybe this is an impression that Kane will end his football career in MLS. 

MLS owners voted in November 2025 to move the league to a summer-to-spring calendar. Starting with the 2027-28 season, play begins in mid to late July, the regular season ends in April and the playoffs finish around May.

An NFL season that opens in September and ends with a Super Bowl in February would sit entirely inside one MLS campaign, leaving both of Kane's sports in season at the same time for roughly five months. The spring-to-fall format being retired was designed partly to stay out of the NFL's way in the months it plays its biggest games.

"If I was to do it, it is something I would take seriously," Kane said. "I would take six months to a year to try and practice before."

Brandon Aubrey, the Dallas Cowboys All-Pro whose path Kane's idea most resembles, went to Toronto FC in the first round of the 2017 MLS SuperDraft, took up kicking in 2019 and spent years practicing before finally landing a professional kicking job with the Birmingham Stallions and eventually signing his breakout NFL contract with the Cowboys in Jul 2023
