The NHL rolled out its Hometown Remix collection on Monday — you can see Yardbarker's ranking of every jersey here, here, here and here — but fans watching on TV and in some arenas are seeing different things on the ice.
Attendees watching Tuesday's Pittsburgh Penguins-Vegas Golden Knights game at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh see the normal black and yellow penguin logo painted at center ice.
Viewers watching the game from home saw a different logo at center ice.
Yes, the logo being aired is a digitally placed graphic imposed on the ice. While the below is a still, action of the fake logo sees the puck and some skate blades being lost under the graphic and no wear and tear from game usage ever developing.

Just look at the difference between the imposed logos — yes some of the on-ice ads are imposed too — and how worn down the actual logo is on the right.
The decision drew the ire of fans and journalists alike who were watching the game.
The fake, imposed center ice logo, on the other hand, is an abomination.

I don’t know if I’ve ever hated an aspect of a tv broadcast as much as I hate that. Please let this trend die quickly. https://t.co/so7iyqsOfl
The Penguins aren't even the first team to do this, either. After some digging, the Florida Panthers did this exact stunt on Monday for their Hometown Remix debut.
Notice the difference of colors, the disappearing acts and the wear and tear between Monday's logo and from the game before on Oct. 30.

There is intense scratching on the Oct. 30 logo, which was early in the second period, compared to the clean appearance from Monday, which was toward the end of the second period.
The strangest part of it all is that these are the only teams who have done this so far. The Philadelphia Flyers, Montreal Canadiens and Columbus Blue Jackets also wore their new uniforms on Tuesday but opted out of a digital logo.
It's understandable that changing out center ice logos in hockey is a difficult process and cannot be done overnight like in the other leagues. The team either lays down its decal or paints what it wants and is stuck with it for the season until the ice is melted.
This just further shows what a disaster the rollout of this program was, making everyone wait until November and having most of the jerseys leak beforehand anyways. These should have been introduced before the season, giving teams the option to run a Hometown Remix-themed logo for the season, especially with how nice the logos do look.
The game presentations already appear tacky enough with the fake ads on the ice and boards, and now it's even worse with fake logos on the ice. This practice further dilutes the NHL product and makes it look even cheaper than it already does.
