Lazio manager Maurizio Sarri has reportedly requested the signing of Ruben Loftus-Cheek, who is equally enthusiastic about a reunion with the Italian manager.

The 29-year-old is a youth product of Chelsea, but he arguably had his best campaign at Stamford Bridge when Sarri was in charge of the Blues, back in the 2018/19 season. Therefore, the two men remain fond of one another, and there has already been talks about a reunion at Lazio, whether during Sarri’s first reign at the club, or following his return last summer.

According to Il Messaggero, Loftus-Cheek has expressed his willingness to join the Italian capital side and work under the 66-year-old once again. The Englishman currently earns circa €4 million at Milan, but he’s said to be willing to spread his salary over a longer period to push the deal through.

The box-to-box midfielder was in Massimiliano Allegri’s starting lineup in the 2-2 draw against Sassuolo on Sunday. However, he’s still considered a second choice behind Luka Modric, Adrien Rabiot and Youssouf Fofana. On the other hand, he would likely earn a regular starting spot under Sarri at Lazio.

However, the source warns that the Biancocelesti will only be able to partially lift the transfer ban, so they’ll have to maintain a ‘zero-cost’ market. Since selling Fisayo Dele-Bashiru and Reda Belahyane might be enough, Lazio would only be able to afford the former Chelsea man by selling one of their top players, potentially Matteo Guendouzi, who has an avid suitor in Sunderland.

The report notes another potential obstacle in the shape of Milan’s former sporting director, Igli Tare, who might not be too keen on reinforcing his old employers, but could instead prefer to keep Loftus-Cheek at Milanello.
