Alejandro Garnacho blocked from leaving Aston Villa

Alejandro Garnacho once seemed destined to spend his finest years beneath the Old Trafford lights.

Manchester United plucked him from Atletico Madrid in 2020, and the fearless winger soon became one of Carrington’s brightest hopes.

He fired United to FA Youth Cup glory, won the Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award and was handed his senior debut aged just 17.

Then came moments that felt like the beginning of something enormous.

Cristiano Ronaldo assisted Garnacho’s first United goal against Real Sociedad.

His astonishing bicycle kick at Everton later won the Puskas Award, before he scored at Wembley as United defeated Manchester City in the 2024 FA Cup final.

Yet football rarely travels in straight lines.

Garnacho left United for Chelsea in 2025 after 144 senior appearances and 26 goals, but his Stamford Bridge chapter lasted only one season before another move beckoned.

A season-long switch to Aston Villa offered another beginning under Unai Emery this summer.

Instead, the 22-year-old has slipped further towards the shadows.

He is yet to start for Villa and has played only 31 Premier League minutes.

Most concerningly, Garnacho has remained on the bench throughout their recent matches despite Emery rotating his options.

Now his difficult situation has been complicated further.

Alejandro Garnacho faces Aston Villa problem

According to The Telegraph, Garnacho cannot simply leave Aston Villa in January because neither Chelsea nor Villa possess a unilateral clause allowing them to end the loan early.

Any premature departure would therefore require both clubs to agree to terminate the season-long arrangement.

Chelsea are reportedly unlikely to approve that unless another club takes over the move and can offer Garnacho more regular football.

Spanish sides are already monitoring his situation, while Roma showed interest before his Villa switch.

The concern is understandable.

Garnacho was unused against Nottingham Forest, Tottenham and Coventry City, with teenagers George Hemmings and Ibrahim Mbaye among those receiving opportunities ahead of him.

There is still time to force open the door.

For a player whose career once accelerated so rapidly, however, Garnacho suddenly finds himself waiting for somebody to unlock it.
