Manchester United went into the break 1–0 up at Old Trafford against Burnley, a score that gives them a chance to regroup after a tough week that included a Carabao Cup exit to League Two side Grimsby Town.
The first half showed glimpses of control from Ruben Amorim’s side, but also the same old problem of not turning possession into goals.
The breakthrough came just before half-time when Casemiro headed a corner against the bar and in off Burnley captain Josh Cullen. It gave United the lead, but also a statistic.
According to Opta, this is the first time in Premier League history that a team’s first two goals of the season have both been own goals. United’s first goal of the season had already come from an opponent’s mistake against Fulham, and Cullen’s mistake made it two in a row.
It shows how short of cutting edge United are up front, with Amorim still waiting for one of his forwards to score in the league.

The first half also brought a blow as summer signing Matheus Cunha was forced off injured before the half-hour mark, looking upset as he trudged down the tunnel.
For Amorim, the goal was a relief after a tough few days, but the circumstances behind it only add to the pressure he’s under.
Manchester United need more than good fortune to change the mood around the club, and with tougher games ahead, the second half against Burnley might be as important for their confidence as it is for the points.
