It has been a summer of ups and downs for Tottenham as they look to build on the Europa League success under Thomas Frank. The Lilywhites managed to achieve the impossible by winning the competition at the end of last season. And the historic achievement was seen as the perfect opportunity to lure quality players to N17 early in the transfer window.
But it is fair to say that the North London club have publicly embarrassed themselves by showing all their cards and still missing out on their intended targets. Spurs failed to sign Morgan Gibbs-White last month, despite triggering his release clause. The England international was all set for a medical at N17 before Nottingham Forest accused the Lilywhites of breaching the confidential contractual details, forcing Daniel Levy to back down.
Not only that, but the Lilywhites also missed out on Eberechi Eze last week. The 27-year-old was on the cusp on joining Thomas Frank’s squad after agreeing personal terms with the club. But Daniel Levy’s incompetence was on full show as he failed to reach an agreement with Crystal Palace for his signature. This gave Arsenal a chance to hijack the deal at the eleventh-hour and sign the England international.
Daniel Levy has been in the media spotlight for all the wrong reasons in recent weeks after making a fool of himself in the transfer market. Well, some may not blame him for missing out on Morgan Gibbs-White last month. But the Spurs chairman is surely at fault for not landing Eberechi Eze. Levy’s dilly-dallying gave Arsenal an opportunity to swoop in and land the 27-year-old in a matter of hours… leaving Levy with an egg on his face.
However, Sami Mokbel does not think the Spurs chairman should be entirely blamed for Tottenham’s failure to land these players. Writing for the BBC, Mokbel said,
“Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is a shrewd operator and there is a sense among those who go have worked closely with him that he believes deals are more economical the later they move into the transfer window.”
The football correspondent added,
“This summer, however, we should perhaps have a degree of sympathy with Levy regarding the club’s lack of signings.”
Sami Mokbel believes that Daniel Levy tends to delay possible signings till the last possible minute as they help Tottenham economically. The football correspondent also adds that Daniel Levy has tried to bring players in early on this summer, something that he does not do regularly. But Mokbel believes that it is not completely Levy’s fault that the players have snubbed Spurs time and again.
With time running out in the transfer window, fans will hope that the Spurs chairman manages to bring in quality players after the failure to land Eberechi Eze. The North London club have managed to sign RB Leipzig star Xavi Simons to fill in the ‘left-wing’ spot. One more signing to fill the void in the #10 position would turn this window into a success.
