Tottenham Hotspur had an intensive midfield search in the recently concluded summer transfer window, and while there were many players linked with a move to N17, most of those didn’t add up to a transfer, and one name that never went away over the summer was Morten Hjulmand.
The Sporting CP skipper has been on the Lilywhites’ radar for over a year, and given his combative style in the middle of the park, complemented by his Danish roots, he was an ideal choice in the current project that Tottenham have undertaken under Thomas Frank at Hotspur Way. And being linked to one of the Premier League heavyweights is a matter of massive pride, but if the 26-year-old is flattered by the interest from the Lilywhites, he isn’t showing it.
And speaking while on international duty with Denmark, Hjulmand was asked about the summer rumours towards a possible transfer to Tottenham and Manchester United. And his response (to Ekstra Bladet via Sport Witness) was a bit confusing:
“Now you say rumours. And I don’t relate to rumours. I have related to the fact that I should start at Sporting and get fit again after the holidays.
“I have come, and we have had some really good matches, where I think we have performed at a good level, even though we ended up losing at the weekend.
I don’t really want to answer whether I have had anything specific to say.”
The thing is, Thomas Frank and Tottenham really wanted to sign Hjulmand, and given the fact that the Dane head coach at the helm at Hotspur Way is known to value midfielders who combine physicality with discipline, bringing in Hjulmand would be an ideal fit into the mould of a player who could anchor the double pivot at N17.
The 26-year-old is not only strong in serials but also is tactically intelligent and would have been a smart addition at Hotspur Way. But while that didn’t materialise, Tottenham did bring in Palhinha at N17 on a loan deal from Bayern Munich earlier this summer.
But that being said, the above comments from Hjulmand don’t close the door for a possible Tottenham move when maybe the winter transfer window comes around.
But for now, Tottenham supporters can put the talks of Hjulmand to bed but expect the links of a possible Hotspur Way move to resurface sooner rather than later.
