JJ Gabriel’s next club is…

Manchester United are trying to rebuild far more than Michael Carrick’s first-team squad.

The club must restore the pathway which once made Old Trafford the natural destination for the best young players in the country.

Money can buy established stars, but it cannot replicate the connection created when an academy graduate walks out in front of the Stretford End.

That makes the possible loss of one of Carrington’s brightest talents about far more than one teenager deciding that his future may lie elsewhere.

JJ Gabriel has asked United to cancel his registration and now appears increasingly likely to leave the club he joined at the age of 11.

The 15-year-old scored 26 goals in 29 academy appearances last season, became the youngest winner of United’s Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award and has regularly trained with Carrick’s senior squad.

Gabriel was also involved during pre-season and scored a hat-trick on his UEFA Youth League debut against Sabah earlier this month.

It’s understood that JJ Gabriel would have been included in the squad against Brighton in the Carabao Cup had he not communicated his desire to leave. An appearance would have made him the youngest first-team player in United’s history.

That demonstrates the difficult position United now find themselves in. The pathway was opening, but Gabriel’s camp seemingly no longer believes that remaining at Old Trafford represents the best route towards fulfilling his enormous potential.

Former England striker Jay Bothroyd, who knows Gabriel’s parents, offered another potential explanation on Piers Morgan’s Football Uncensored.

Bothroyd described Gabriel as having a “Neymar body”, highlighting his acceleration, quick feet and slight frame. Unlike Wayne Rooney or Arsenal prospect Max Dowman, Gabriel is not physically overpowering senior defenders at 15.

That does not mean he cannot eventually succeed in England, however, it makes the prospect of developing in a more technical league understandable.

Real Madrid are currently reported to be leading the race, with Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain also pursuing the teenager.

Here is how CentreDevils ranks those four destinations, with one United wildcard, based upon their suitability for Gabriel rather than solely the current negotiating position.

1. Barcelona

Barcelona represent the most natural footballing home for Gabriel, with their interest stretching back years rather than emerging during the current dispute.

Back in August 2024, the Catalan club had given the then-13-year-old a Camp Nou tour, complimentary match tickets and a signed Lamine Yamal shirt, while also introducing him to members of the squad.

That extraordinary attention demonstrated how highly Barcelona already valued Gabriel and helped establish a connection which could now influence his decision.

La Masia would also suit his close control, acceleration and ability to operate across the attack. Rather than relying upon physical strength, Barcelona’s system would encourage the technical qualities behind his comparisons with Lionel Messi and Neymar.

Breaking into the senior side would remain difficult, but the emergence of Yamal demonstrates that age is no barrier when a player is ready.

Real Madrid may lead the reported race, but Barcelona’s playing style and years of groundwork make them Gabriel’s most suitable destination.

2. Real Madrid

Real Madrid may currently be the most likely destination, even if they narrowly miss out on top place in this ranking.

It’s understood that Real Madrid are leading the race, while Ben Jacobs has also explained that the club’s Castilla side is central to their pitch.

Castilla compete against senior opposition in the Spanish third tier, offering Gabriel a potentially quicker transition from academy football into the professional game.

That could be crucial. Gabriel has already dominated players several years older than him in England and may not gain enough from simply repeating that process at under-18 level.

Madrid’s recruitment of elite young players from around the world demonstrates why they are interested. Gabriel fits their model as a potentially generational talent who could be developed before his market value explodes.

The risk is that Madrid collect more elite prospects than they can accommodate. Gabriel could receive senior football quickly without necessarily receiving first-team football at the Bernabéu.

3. Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich provide a compelling compromise between technical development and preparation for a physically demanding senior league.

German football places significant value on direct running, transitions and attacking players willing to engage defenders individually. Those qualities already feature prominently in Gabriel’s game.

He could begin with Bayern’s youth sides or reserve team before being gradually introduced to first-team training.

The Bundesliga has also been more willing than the Premier League to trust teenage attackers with meaningful senior minutes.

However, moving to Munich would still require Gabriel to adapt culturally, tactically and physically. Bayern are not a developmental club prepared to tolerate prolonged inconsistency in their first team.

The route exists, but it would have to be supported by a clearly defined plan rather than promises built around the club’s reputation.

4. Paris Saint-Germain

PSG are understandable admirers because Gabriel fits their increasing focus on securing the best young French and European talent.

Their positional football could suit a player capable of operating across the attack, while domestic dominance can create opportunities to introduce younger players.

France, however, should not be presented as an escape from physical football. Ligue 1 is an athletic and demanding competition, even if attackers can sometimes receive greater tactical freedom than in England.

PSG also possess enormous attacking depth and their academy has produced several outstanding players who ultimately needed to leave Paris to establish themselves.

Gabriel could flourish there, but the pathway is less convincing than the three clubs above them.

5. Manchester United

The final possibility is that United somehow convince Gabriel to stay.

No other club can offer the relationships he has already developed at Carrington, while he was apparently one decision away from entering Carrick’s first-team squad.

Remaining would allow Gabriel to continue training with senior players, feature for the under-21s and potentially receive carefully managed opportunities in domestic cup competitions.

United must not respond by making reckless promises to a 15-year-old. They do, however, need to explain precisely how his next two seasons would look and why the current turmoil will not obstruct his development.

Barcelona may be the best stylistic fit and Madrid the present frontrunners, but staying at United could still offer the shortest route to a senior debut.

The problem is no longer opportunity alone. It is whether enough trust remains for Gabriel and his family to believe in it.
