Jose Mourinho’s future at Benfica is growing increasingly uncertain as the end of the season approaches.
Speaking about his future in a press conference prior to Benfica’s game against Sporting Lisbon on Sunday, the 63-year-old was asked whether he would be in the dugout for next season at the club.
In response, Mourinho stated: “I cannot say, how can I say such a thing? It doesn’t just depend on me! It’s obvious.”
Adding to this, the former Manchester United boss drew comparison to employees at a club or even a journalist with him stating firmly: “A coach in a club structure, a coach, a player, a press director, a physiotherapist, all of us in a club structure, like you, as a journalist from A BOLA, you cannot guarantee that you will be at BOLA for the next 10 years; maybe you want to be, but you cannot guarantee it.
“Obviously, I cannot guarantee it.”
It emerged earlier this week that Mourinho had attracted interest from Newcastle United who viewed the manager as a leading contender should Eddie Howe leave the club this summer.
GOAL reinforce this point whilst also signalling towards interest towards a return to the Premier League.
Portuguese outlet Record have also reported that the possibility of Jose Mourinho returning to Real Madrid is alive with his name being discussed at the top of Madrid’s hierarchy.
Should a project be right from either the Premier League or Real Madrid, given Mourinho’s uncertainty about his future, he may be tempted away from Benfica.
Jose Mourinho is well-known in the English top flight, primarily for his spells at Chelsea, Manchester United, and Tottenham Hotspur.
Whilst with Chelsea, the 63-year-old won the FA Cup, three Premier League titles, three EFL Cups titles, and even the Community Shield in a spell that saw the Blues become one of the best teams in England.
His time at Manchester United, too, brough silverware with the Europa League, EFL Cup, and Community Shield each coming during his reign.
Mourinho’s managerial spell at Tottenham Hotspur, which came between 2019 and 2021, did not see any silverware but did see him guide Spurs to an average of 1.8 points per game.
If he was to return to the Premier League, it would mark the end of a five-year hiatus from the English top flight with him arriving in a league that has changed since he left it in 2021.
His spell at Real Madrid, falling between 2010 and 2013, saw him win LaLiga, the Supercoppa, and the Champions League.
A return to Real Madrid would come 13 years after his last with the Spanish club in a changed shape. Should he deliver success in a second spell, he may be considered a legend in his own right.
