Manchester United have not had as strong a start to the season as expected. Under Ruben Amorim, the team are ninth in the table so far and has managed just four points from three games. A 1-0 loss to Arsenal in their opening game made for a rocky start, while a draw against Fulham and a thrilling 3-2 win over Burnley provided some relief. To make matters worse, the team was knocked out of the EFL Cup early, where they were beaten on penalties by Grimsby Town. Meanwhile, Marcus Rashford’s move to Barcelona and Alejandro Garnacho’s move to Chelsea have been completed so far this summer.
Now another big buzz has taken hold within the team. According to a report in Gazzetta dello Sport, Juventus are planning to sign Manchester United defender Noussair Mazraoui. The news is surprising as Mazraoui joined the club just twelve months ago. The Italian club are currently looking for a fullback who can bring balance to both the defence and attack, and Mazraoui’s versatility makes him a perfect option.
Juventus’ current choices are either inexperienced or are primarily wingers, so targeting Mazraoui, who has adapted to Amorim’s system, seems pragmatic for them. The report also states that Juventus could consider a loan deal to test United’s strengths. On the other hand, this decision is difficult for United as there is very little time left before the transfer window closes and finding an alternative would prove to be extremely difficult.
Letting the 28-year-old right-back leave would be a big gamble at this point. If a good offer comes in, the club will definitely consider it, especially if it strengthens the balance sheet or opens up a way to sign a key player. But the reality is that the transfer window is almost over, and finding an alternative to a player like Mazraoui is almost impossible at this time.
Amorim has already described him as a “top player” and made it clear his system can thrive on his versatility. Whether at right wing-back or wide centre-back, his technical ability and ease on the ball are a huge asset to the team. The Moroccan has also shown flashes of attacking play since his arrival. Juventus are interested because of his versatility, but if United let him go without a replacement, it would weaken the defence even more.
Amorim has already stood by him after Burnley, handling the pressure on goalkeepers, so removing another pillar of the defence would not be good for the team. Just as the club has made it clear they won’t let Kobbie Mainou go without bringing in a replacement, the same strictness should be shown to Mazraoui. With Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool in the next few weeks, it would be wise to preserve depth in the squad.
We think United should consider Juventus’ offer, but this time the answer should be a ‘no’. The team needs stability, and it would be a big mistake to leave a player like Mazraoui now.
