Lionel Messi is continuing his preparation for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after managing a recent hamstring issue that briefly raised concerns about his availability. The Argentina captain was included in Lionel Scaloni’s final squad and is expected to be ready for its title defense, with the team closely monitoring his workload during the final stages of preparation.

Twelve days before Argentina opens its campaign against Algeria, the 38-year-old remains at the center of a squad attempting to become the first nation since Brazil in 1962 to successfully defend a World Cup title.

While much of the attention surrounding Messi has centered on his fitness and Argentina’s pursuit of history, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner received major recognition away from the pitch on Wednesday.

The Princess of Asturias Award for Sports announced Messi as its 2026 recipient, making him the first footballer to receive the honor individually. The award is among the most prestigious recognitions in Spain and is presented annually to individuals or organizations whose achievements and influence extend beyond their respective fields.

The jury cited Messi’s extraordinary sporting career, exemplary conduct, and broader social impact, including his charitable efforts supporting education and healthcare initiatives for children. The Argentine star was selected from a field of 27 candidates representing 12 nationalities.

The honor adds another unique distinction to a résumé that already includes a World Cup title, two Copa América trophies, eight Ballon d’Or awards, and more than 40 major team trophies. It also places Messi alongside previous Princess of Asturias sports recipients such as Serena Williams, Eliud Kipchoge, and Carolina Marín.

Messi will turn 39 during the World Cup, and this tournament is widely expected to be the final chapter of an international career that has already been full of accomplishments. Yet even as his playing career enters its closing stages, recognition for his impact continues to grow.

For now, however, individual awards are expected to take a back seat, with Messi’s attention fixed on the challenge ahead. Argentina opens Group D against Algeria on June 16 before facing Austria and Jordan later in the group stage.
