Manchester United’s first win of the season finally arrived against Burnley, but the match was far more complicated than it should have been until one player made a difference.

Bruno Fernandes’ late penalty secured a 3-2 victory over Burnley, a match that should not have been nearly as tough as it turned out.

United were missing plenty of opportunities and lacked the composure that top teams rely on.

But that changed when one player came off the bench and brought some much-needed calm to the game with an impressive short spell on the pitch.

Noussair Mazraoui adds calm to Man Utd

Ruben Amorim, who is not one to hand out compliments lightly, once called Noussair Mazraoui the “future of Man Utd”. There’s a reason for that.

The former Bayern Munich full-back has a mix of technical skill and adaptability that fits well into a side full of fiery players. While passion has its place, there are times when control and composure are exactly what is needed.

Having been sidelined all season due to injury, the Moroccan defender made his debut in the 85th minute. United, once again trailing after conceding an equaliser, appeared poised to drop more points.

Mazraoui came on as the right-sided centre-back, and it did not take long for him to bring some order. His composure on the ball helped settle things down quickly.

United began attacking more through their right side, with the Moroccan star moving the ball forward accurately and helping push Burnley back. The penalty that won them the match came from good work down that flank involving Mazraoui, Amad, Mbeumo, and Fernandes.

Since the wing-back positions currently seem well-covered and require more energy than control at this point, the wide centre-back spot looks like an ideal fit for what Mazraoui brings to the team.

Mazraoui set to become a regular starter again

Ruben Amorim did not have to deal with much fallout from Mazraoui’s absence early in the season, thanks in large part to how others stepped up.

Leny Yoro took a big step forward during that stretch, and Matthijs de Ligt looked solid holding down the middle of the back three.

Even if United did not miss him on paper, his return still felt noticeable. That alone says a lot about what he adds to this squad.

His background as a full-back, with more defensive discipline than Diogo Dalot, gives United another option along the backline that Amorim can lean on when needed.

With Yoro now covering Shaw’s usual spot, Mazraoui looks set for regular minutes on the right side of defence.

The rest of United’s back line is built around athleticism and physicality. Mazraoui is not cut from that mould – he brings more guile and composure than raw power.

That mix should help him settle back into a consistent role before long. He just makes sense for how this team wants to play.
